Rocky Hills and Low Valleys
Asphalt paving in Nuevo deals with varied ground. Nuevo is a rural, unincorporated community of about 6.77 square miles east of Perris, with rocky, rolling hills and low-lying valleys. The usually dry San Jacinto River runs along its northern side. Natural vegetation is mostly coastal sage scrub, much of it cleared from the lowlands for homes and farming.
Rock and soft ground
One Nuevo driveway can cross rocky high ground and soft valley soil within a few hundred feet. Rock makes grading slow; soft soil settles under a thin base. We probe the route, dig out soft spots and replace them with compacted aggregate, and work around large rock rather than paving thin over it.
Near the river
Properties near the San Jacinto River can see water move through after heavy storms even though the river is usually dry. Drives near low ground need grades that let water pass, not humps that dam it.
Typical jobs
- Long gravel drives paved
- Parking areas for trucks, trailers and equipment
- Farm and ranch yards
- Old asphalt rebuilt where the base has failed
- Crack repair and seal coating
Phasing a long drive
Many owners pave the most-used part first, usually near the house or the road. We leave a squared joint so the next section ties in cleanly.
County roads
Nuevo is unincorporated, so roads are Riverside County's. If your drive's approach reaches the county right-of-way, we check with the county before scheduling.
Costs
HomeGuide lists standard asphalt driveways at about $5 to $12 per square foot and recycled asphalt at about $4 to $9. A 10 by 300 foot drive is 3,000 square feet, roughly $15,000 to $36,000 in new hot mix. Using recycled asphalt for the far section is one way to save.
Rock in the base
Where a route crosses rock, we grade around it and cover it with compacted base so the asphalt has uniform support. Asphalt laid directly over a high rock point and soft soil beside it will crack along the line between them.
Heat and sealing
Summers are hot. Seal a new drive after it cures, then every few years.
Dust during grading
The South Coast AQMD's Rule 403 bars construction dust visible beyond the property line. On open lots we water during grading and keep county roads clean.
What the job looks like
1. We walk the route and mark rock, soft spots and drainage. 2. Soft soil is dug out and replaced; rock is graded around. 3. Base is compacted and shaped to drain. 4. Hot asphalt is placed and rolled. 5. Shoulders are backfilled and edges finished.
Coastal sage and fire season
Where drives pass through sage scrub, we keep equipment on cleared ground in fire season.
Older farm drives
Many Nuevo properties were farms first, and their drives were built for tractors, not cars. Those drives often follow field edges and low ground. When paving, we look at whether a slight reroute onto higher, firmer ground would save base work and avoid the wettest spots.
Owners on acreage
Owners here tend to want long-lasting work. We list base depth and asphalt thickness in writing so you know what you are getting.
