Getting the Driveway Right From the Ground Up
Asphalt driveway installation is the job we do most often in Perris. Some homeowners are replacing a driveway that has cracked into pieces or sunk along the edges. Some are building new, or converting a dirt or gravel drive on a larger lot. Others want more room: a wider driveway, a side pad for a boat or an RV pad. In every case, how long the driveway lasts depends mostly on the ground and the base under it.
When replacement makes sense
HomeGuide's repair guide suggests repair when damage covers less than about 25 to 30 percent of the surface and the base is stable, and replacement when cracks cover 60 to 70 percent or more, there are several potholes, or the driveway is 20 to 30 years old. With so many Perris-area homes built in the last few decades, a lot of original driveways are reaching that point now.
How we install a driveway
1. Remove the old surface and haul it away. 2. Check the subgrade; dig out soft or wet areas and replace them with compacted aggregate. 3. Place and compact the base, usually 6 to 8 inches for a home driveway. 4. Set grades so water runs to the street or a landscaped area, away from the garage and foundation. 5. Place and roll hot asphalt, typically 2 to 3 inches compacted, or 3 to 4 inches where trucks, trailers or RVs park. 6. Finish edges and tie into the garage slab and apron.
Summer installs
In July and August, new asphalt stays soft longer. We start early in the day and give you clear instructions on when to drive on it. Avoid turning your wheels while parked and keep jacks and kickstands off it for the first few weeks.
Widening and RV pads
Adding width is common in Perris, where many households have work trucks, trailers or toys. We saw-cut a clean joint, build the new area on a deeper base and tie it in flush. RV pads get a heavier section than the main driveway.
HOA approval
Many newer neighborhoods have HOA rules on driveway materials and appearance. If you are in an HOA, check first and get approval; we can provide a written scope to submit.
The street side
The apron between your property line and the street is public right-of-way. If your project changes it, we check with the city or Riverside County about what is required before scheduling.

Asphalt Driveway Installation Questions
How long does a driveway installation take?
Usually one to three days: removal and base work first, paving in a day once the base is ready.
Is 2 inches of asphalt enough for a driveway?
For cars on a solid base, 2 to 3 inches compacted is a common residential section. For trucks, trailers or RVs, 3 to 4 inches over a deeper base is the safer choice.
Can asphalt be installed over my concrete driveway?
It is possible if the slabs are stable, but joints and cracks tend to show through. Removing the concrete usually gives a longer-lasting result.
Do I need HOA approval?
If your home is in an HOA, usually yes. Check your architectural guidelines before scheduling.
How much does a 20 by 20 driveway cost?
About $2,000 to $4,800 in HomeGuide's national table for standard asphalt, before removal or base repair.
